The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero recorded about 2.076 million installations across the country. Households, businesses and developers added 27,391 systems during June, contributing 132 megawatts of new capacity. Officials may revise the provisional figures as additional project data enters the national database. The total includes domestic rooftops, commercial sites and utility-scale solar farms.

June ranked as the second-strongest month for installation numbers in the UK data series. March 2026 remains the record month, with 28,782 systems added. Solar capacity expanded by 2.2 gigawatts during the year to June, representing growth of 10.9%. The market also added about 269,000 systems during 2025, the highest annual total on record. Smaller rooftop arrays led the installation count, while larger projects supplied much of the added generating capacity.
Attention now turns to plug-in solar rules that take effect on August 27, 2026. The framework allows approved microgenerators to connect through a standard UK plug and household socket. Qualifying products can provide no more than 800 watts of alternating current output. They must meet Interim Product Specification version 2 and work safely with the local distribution network. The rules exclude plug-in batteries and devices that store electricity imported from household circuits.
Safety rules govern plug-in connections
The legal change updates the Plugs and Sockets Safety Regulations 1994 and the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002. UK Parliament received the statutory instrument on July 17, one day after ministers approved it. The amendment creates a narrow exception to restrictions on plugs used for generating equipment. A notified body must confirm that each plug meets the relevant BS 1363 requirements. Product approval applies across the UK, while the electricity safety amendment covers England, Wales and Scotland.
The interim specification sets requirements for electrical design, mounting systems, fire protection, labelling and consumer instructions. A technical study tested representative plug-in solar products on domestic wiring under controlled conditions. Researchers recorded stable operation and found no sustained unsafe energisation or unacceptable thermal effects. The study also found differences in export controls, electromagnetic compatibility and overall product quality. Those findings helped shape the UK-specific safety standard for legal market entry.
Retail market readies approved products
The government consultation drew 466 responses from businesses, specialists, regulators and members of the public. More than 85% supported the interim specification, while most respondents also backed the plug amendment. Participants included manufacturers, installers, network operators, electricians, academics and consumer groups. Some highlighted older household wiring, noncompliant online products and the need for clear instructions. Others urged officials to distinguish plug-in solar panels from plug-in battery systems.
Retailers including B&Q, Currys, Amazon and Lidl joined preparations for the new product category. The format serves households that cannot use conventional rooftop systems, including some renters and residents with balconies or outdoor space. Systems using the new connection route cannot operate legally before August 27. From that date, only approved products within the 800-watt limit may connect through a standard household socket. The June capacity total does not include systems using the new plug-in framework.
