VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria is preparing BEACONSAT, the country’s first military satellite and its largest domestically developed spacecraft to date. The satellite will detect and analyze interference affecting global navigation satellite systems, including GPS and Galileo. Austria plans to launch BEACONSAT in February 2027 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The project focuses on identifying jamming and spoofing signals from orbit and gathering data on when and where navigation systems face disruption.

BEACONSAT will serve as a technology demonstrator within a multi-year research and development program. Jamming involves radio interference that blocks or degrades satellite navigation signals. Spoofing sends false navigation information that can cause receivers to calculate incorrect positions. Satellite navigation supports aircraft, ships, vehicles, drones, emergency services and other systems. The Austrian Defence Ministry expects the mission to provide data that can support its operational processes and strengthen its understanding of GNSS interference.
GATE Space, a space technology company based in Schwechat, leads the BEACONSAT project and holds overall responsibility for the mission. The company started in 2022 as a spin-off from TU Wien. It develops chemical propulsion systems that allow satellites to maneuver in orbit. For BEACONSAT, GATE Space supplies the propulsion system, satellite structure and thermal management technology. The company has completed more than 8,000 hot-fire engine tests near Vienna Airport under atmospheric and vacuum conditions.
Austrian technology forms core of satellite mission
Other European companies contribute key systems to Austria’s first military satellite. Graz-based IGASPIN provides technology designed to detect and analyze GNSS interference with high precision. Denmark’s Space Inventor supplies additional satellite components, including the onboard computer. The project combines commercial space hardware with systems developed for the BEACONSAT demonstration mission. Austria’s Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure has also supported GATE Space through Austria Wirtschaftsservice with about 750,000 euros in funding.
The European Space Agency supports and co-finances the mission through its ESA Marketplace program for technology demonstrations. The arrangement allows commercially available space technologies to undergo testing in security-related applications. Austrian officials describe BEACONSAT as a demonstrator rather than a standalone operational satellite program. The project will collect information about interference affecting satellite navigation signals from orbit. Those findings will feed into Defence Ministry processes as Austria develops its military space capabilities.
BEACONSAT joins broader Austrian space program
Austria’s Defence Ministry is establishing an organizational unit dedicated to space services. Its work covers satellite communications, satellite navigation and satellite-based reconnaissance. BEACONSAT forms part of that developing structure while concentrating specifically on navigation interference. The ministry’s military space strategy calls for the Austrian Armed Forces to expand from using space services toward operating space infrastructure and services. Austria adopted that strategy in 2023, with implementation extending toward 2035 and beyond.
The February 2027 launch remains the announced timetable for BEACONSAT, with a Falcon 9 scheduled to carry the spacecraft into orbit. After deployment, the satellite will gather and analyze GNSS interference data as part of its research mission. The program brings together Austria’s Defence Ministry, GATE Space and specialized European technology companies. BEACONSAT will mark Austria’s first military satellite mission while testing domestically developed systems for monitoring disruptions to GPS, Galileo and other satellite navigation services.
