MADRID, SPAIN / RankWire.AI / – Spain’s annual consumer price inflation rose to 3.6% in July, from 3.2% in June, according to final official data. The result topped the 3.5% flash estimate released on July 30. Consumer prices increased 0.3% from June, above the preliminary monthly estimate of 0.2%. The National Statistics Institute, or INE, said the July figures are final and will not face further revision.
Transport was the strongest upward contributor to the annual rate, with prices in the group rising 6.2% from a year earlier. The increase reflected higher fuel and lubricant prices for personal vehicles. Those prices rose more sharply than they did in July 2025. Housing costs increased 5.7% annually, one percentage point above June’s rate, as electricity prices climbed faster than a year earlier.
Core inflation, which excludes unprocessed food and energy products, edged up to 3.0% from 2.9% in June. Spain’s Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices rose 3.9% from a year earlier, compared with 3.6% in June. The final harmonised rate also exceeded the preliminary 3.8% estimate. On a monthly basis, the harmonised index was unchanged in July. The measure provides a common basis for price comparisons across European Union countries.
Fuel and electricity lift July prices
Monthly transport prices increased 2.3%, giving the largest positive contribution to Spain’s headline CPI during July. Housing prices rose 1.6% on the month because of higher electricity costs and smaller increases in gas and liquid fuels. Recreation, sport and culture prices also rose 2.3%, driven by higher package holiday prices. Together, those categories outweighed declines elsewhere in the consumer basket.
Clothing and footwear prices fell 10.2% from June as Spain’s summer sales reduced prices across the category. Food and non-alcoholic beverage prices declined 0.7%, reflecting lower prices for fruit, nuts, vegetables, pulses and potatoes. Across Spain’s autonomous communities, Cantabria recorded the highest annual CPI increase at 4.3%. Extremadura had the lowest rate among the autonomous communities at 3.0%, while the national figure stood at 3.6%.
Spain’s harmonised inflation stays above euro-area rate
Spain’s 3.9% harmonised inflation rate remained above the euro area’s 2.9% flash estimate for July. Euro-area inflation had stood at 2.8% in June before edging higher in July. Eurostat published the July euro-area figure as an initial estimate, while Spain’s national harmonised rate is final. The harmonised measure follows a common framework that allows inflation rates to be compared across European Union economies.
The July release continued a recent rise in Spain’s headline CPI after the annual rate reached 3.4% in March. It then stood at 3.2% in April, May and June before increasing in July. Core inflation moved from 2.8% in April to 3.0% in May, 2.9% in June and 3.0% in July. The INE calculates the CPI using about 200,000 monthly price observations covering goods and services purchased by households across Spain.
